Surf continues to champion its support for Filipino moms nationwide by showcasing their wais business skills in the recently held Wais U Christmas Bazaar held last December 6-8, at Market! Market!, Taguig City.
Surf partnered with the digital mompreneur support group Filipino Homebased Moms or FHMoms, which has over 440k members nationwide, to launch Surf Wais University–an online platform featuring FREE negosyo courses that enable aspiring mompreneurs with various opportunities and tools, honing their wais-ness and diskarte skills. Fifteen of the 11,000 Surf Wais U Graduates were able to showcase their newly established negosyos at the Wais U Christmas Bazaar, as a culmination of their finely honed entrepreneurial skills and efforts.
Not only were they able to promote their hard-earned businesses, but they also supported their fellow#TeamWais Moms as well. The three-day event also featured programs hosted by PEP and FHMoms consisting of a panel discussion, games, short talks, raffles, giveaways, and even quick Zumba sessions to kickstart the day.
The opening day’s panel discussion was led by FHMoms’ resident host, Ruf Valera. Comprising the panel was FHMoms’ founder, MK Bertulfo; Wais U graduate, Christina Valdez; fashion designer, Trishka Puno Samonte; content creator, Jannica Suillans, and foodpreneur, Mericle Gumato.
When asked about how her entrepreneurial advocacy came to be and how Wais U supplemented her journey, Mommy MK shared her story: “Mayroon kaming babuyan, apartment, bakery, patahian, lahat na ng traditional businesses. Yung nanay ko, nakikita ko rin siya na umaattend ng mga seminar ng mga school, mga barangay seminar. So nung sinimulan ko yung Filipina Homebased Moms nung 2017, ang advocacy talaga namin ay magturo about online jobs, pero eventually, during the pandemic, binalikan ko yung goals ng FHMoms which is makatulong sa mga nanay na kumita.”
Mommy MK added that through this Surf Wais U collaboration, she met plenty of inspiring experts and fellow mompreneurs. “Ang Surf Wais U, sa isang taong partnership, ako mismo as an entrepreneur natututo ako sa mga lessons and courses na kami rin ang nag write kaya ang dami kong na-meet na speakers and trainers sa community na talagang hands-on pagdating sa pagturo at pag mentor sa mga moms.”

Wais U graduate, Mommy Christina, shared how Wais U was such a big help to her even if she isn’t a newbie in the world of business: “Actually, hindi naman bago ang pag nenegosyo sa akin kasi nag start naman ako even pre-pandemic, pero hindi ko na-imagine na noong nag pandemic, mas marami pala akong matututunan kasi at the comfort of my home, pwede akong umattend ng mga business classes na dati may bayad!”

It is no secret that the pandemic affected many businesses, with so many business owners fighting to stay afloat amid the economic downturn. Among those who fought the widespread effects of the pandemic was Mommy Trish, who disclosed how she overcame the different challenges that shook her fashion design business. “As a fashion designer and as a first-time mom, nakita ko yung difference talaga nung wala pang akong anak na nag wwork then biglang may anak na. Kailangan mo talaga maging ma-diskarte as a mom, mag plan ka ahead.
Mommy Trish admitted that building a business amid a pandemic is no walk in the park, but she shared some tips on how others can pull through. “Generally speaking, gusto ko lang i-emphasize na in every business, talagang mayroon tayong makukuhang challenges. Hindi tayo experts right away, kailangan mo mag connect sa customers and clients mo. So mga struggles diyan are miscommunication with customers or kaya with your staff. My advice is to always connect with your customers, and always value their feedback. Para matuto tayo and ma-better yung process natin.”
Meanwhile, Mommy Mericle shared how she manages to make her food business stand out in the local F&B industry: “You have to know your target kasi yung market mo, sila ang may relationship ka with as an entrepreneur. For me, I keep up with the trends kasi I also communicate with my customers.” She also added how social media should be maximized to the fullest when thinking of ways to remain innovative: “Focus on digital marketing, kasi doon naka focus ang tao.”
Regarding milestones in her business, Mommy Jannica details her experience: “An achievement is nakikilala na ako ng mga brands, ng mga ibang mommies, just by posting TikTok content, and I share mommy experiences and kung paano ko tinuturuan mga anak ko. Nakakatuwa kasi nabibigyan ako ng ganitong exposure, and as a small time business stay-at-home mom, malaking milestone ito for me kasi hindi ko ito ine-expect and nakakatuwa na may mga nag rreach out and na-feature din ako before sa GMA. It’s a platform na nakaka-inspire ng mommies, so tayo tayo lang din ang nag eencourage, nag ssupport, and yun talaga isa sa mga goal ko. Lumawak ang ma-touch and inspire nating mommies to really start getting out of their comfort zone and to show them na kaya rin nila maging mommies and businesswomen.”
